Smith began his career in 1974 with Angel and the Snake, which became Blondie, before leaving in 1975 to join Television, replacing Richard Hell. He cited Blondie as a ‘sinking ship’ and Television as his ‘favourite band’. With Television, he contributed to the influential albums Marquee Moon (1977) and Adventure (1978), participated in their 1992 reunion, and performed with them into the 2000s.
